This Week's Soul Work: Reading: Chapter 3, "More About Alcoholism,” page 42 second paragraph to top of page 43, "...I have now." 1. What do you think the several lifelong conceptions are that need to be thrown out the window? 2. What were your several lifelong conceptions that needed to be thrown out the window? 3. If not, what would our life be? 4. Workshop question part one: Picking it apart, what lifelong conceptions did you throw out at the BEGINNING of recovery? 5. Workshop question part two: What lifelong conceptions have you thrown out SINCE the beginning of recovery, about who you are, maybe how you spend your time, or lifelong ideas? 6. When you gave up your lifelong conceptions and it wasn't easy, what was the outcome? Was it positive, did God bless you, do you see a blessing of moving from one lifelong conception to another? 7. But the moment I made up my mind to go through with the process, I had the curious feeling that my alcoholic condition was relieved, as in fact it proved to be. Is that your experience? 8. Quite as important was the discovery that spiritual principles would solve all my problems. What spiritual principles are they talking about? 9. My old manner of life was by no means a bad one, but I would not exchange its best moments for the worst I have now. Is that true for you? Remember a worst moment, and remember today a best moment being sober. 10. Write down what spiritual principles you believe are necessary and bring this to the workshop next week. END

This Week's Soul Work: Reading: Chapter 3, "More About Alcoholism,” first paragraph page 42, to second paragraph, "...was pretty drastic." 1. Who was the first person who told you about Alcoholics Anonymous? Do you remember their name? 2. Were you insulted or relieved when someone first mentioned to you about a 12-step program? 3. Look up "concede." Have you been able to concede? 4. How are you doing working the tools in your fellowship today? 5. ...if I thought myself alcoholic and if I were really licked this time. Are you willing to concede on those both propositions? If not, write about it. If you are, write about it. 6. Write out how you would explain the alcoholic mentality to a newcomer. 7. Would you classify yourself as having a hopeless condition in your addictions? 8. Give one experience of a hopeless condition in your own experience. 9. Have you reached that point yet where you have had to give up the conviction you can do the job yourself? 10. Do you have someone in your life who outlined the spiritual answer and program of action? Acknowledge them. "Thank you for being my sponsor, someone I trust, giving me the ability to tell you the hardest area of my life." 11. What were "their proposals?" Do you know what their proposals were? If you're scratching your head, try "the 12 steps." Admit you are powerless, cannot do it yourself, and make a decision you are not going to be in charge. 12. What is your program of action? 13. Is your program saving your life? 14. Workshop question: How can you say the program of action though entirely sensible, was pretty drastic? Can you identify with "not a cloud on the horizon?" 2. Can you relate to the thought of it being "nice to have a couple of cocktails with dinner?" 3. Are you white-knuckling? 4. When was the last time you had "unbearable mental or physical suffering?" 5. Can you relate to "no fight whatever," page 42 paragraph 2? 6. Write on hungry angry lonely tired (HALT) and how that relates to "no fight whatever against the first drink." If it's about over-confidence, write about that too. 7. Have you learned from experience how you always need to be on guard? 8. How is having God on one side and my fellowship on the other going to help me not be off guard and pick up? 9. Have you come to the point where you absolutely know that willpower and self-knowledge will not help you in those strange mental spots? 10. Write about the time you remember that you felt hopelessly defeated. 11. When was the last time you did a 12-step call in any of your fellowships? 12. Did anyone ever ask you if you thought yourself an alcoholic? Who asked you that? This Week's Soul Work: Reading: Chapter 3, "More About Alcoholism,” top of page 40 "He was positive..." to end of second paragraph "...keeping on guard." 1. What does the whole totality of sobriety mean to you? 2. How are you dealing with the "I, self and me?" Are you growing up? Do you feel you can say "I am sober and live a sober life today?" Not all about me? 3. Workshop question: Take out the "alcohol" in More About Alcoholism. Write "More about I, self and me." How are you doing in your sobriety? Is it all about I, self and me? What does that mean? 4. How much self-knowledge fixes anything today for you? 5. Write this down: Self-knowledge itself is not bad. It's a good thing. How is it a good thing? 6. Write about when self-knowledge be a detriment. Give one example of both self-knowledge being a good thing, and self-knowledge being a detriment. 7. Are you a Fred? Are you a Fred when it comes to something else in your life besides alcohol? For example, a relationship you know is toxic, or in some other area besides alcohol? 8. How many of you ever felt you would "never do it again?" 9. What does the subtle insanity preceding the first drink look like? (Remember your own to help a newcomer.) 10. What gives me the ability to have compassion and tell my story to somebody? 11. Write this down: "My willpower is excellent. My willpower gives me the ability to go to God." Are you going to "stop, drop and pray" without willpower? When you want to drink and that thought suddenly occurs, what do you have to do? You have to use your willpower to "stop, drop and pray" for help. 12. Will you use your willpower to go to God, or willpower to go to drink? 13. Willpower. How is it good? How can it be used in self-destructive way? 14. Write on progress not perfection. Do you still carry around any shame about being an alcoholic, food addict, codependent, whatever you are? 2. Do you believe that it's absolutely true that you won't be able to stop drinking on basis of self-knowledge? 3. Have you ever met anyone who was able to stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge? 4. What was your experience of trying to stop on the basis of self-knowledge? 5. Were you self-deceived into thinking you could stop on the basis of self-knowledge? 6. Has there been a person you've once talked to about addiction who has ever come back to you? 7. Take the story of Fred, put yourself in it as much as you can, and look at the parallels. How much can you relate to Fred? Where are you today? Are you stuck where Fred is? 8. Workshop question: Main addiction aside, what is a problem in your life? Relationship, debting, cluttering, something you know is a problem or someone has told you is a problem. Take a full minute to ask, "God where is there a problem in my life?" Then answer... What area of your life do you know you need to put into the triangle? (Giving to God, being transparent with recovery programs). Has anybody told you that they see a problem, or is it just between you and God? Have you told anybody that you have this issue? Have you made an action plan around it? Write out today's action plan. END |
