We Agnostics p. 49 start of 2nd paragraph: ‘We, who have traveled this dubious path, beg you to lay aside prejudice, even against organized religion.’ Finishing at end of 3rd paragraph on p. 50 ‘As a celebrated American statesman put it, ‘Let’s look at the record.’” Soul work Look up: dubious, prejudice (again), stability, intolerance, tolerance, miraculous. 49: 2 Draw the spiritual triangle around ‘We’. We, who have traveled this dubious path, beg you to lay aside prejudice, even against organized religion. Q1 Are you still prejudiced? Are you laying aside prejudice? Name the prejudices that you are still holding onto. Q2 Are you prejudiced against organized religion. Why? b) Have you investigated organized religion or are you throwing the baby out with the bathwater? c) Did you or someone you know have a bad experience? In the back of the Big Book it says: ignorance is prejudice prior to investigation. Really explore any deep-seated prejudice about God and religions. It will help you in walking with the God of your understanding. Q3. Are you willing to look at organized religion in the various faiths that have given purpose and direction to millions? Yes or no? Write on your answer. People of faith have a logical idea of what life is all about. Q4. Do you agree with this statement? Yes or No? b) Are you a person of faith who has a logical idea of what life is all about? We used to amuse ourselves by cynically dissecting spiritual beliefs and practices when we might have observed that many spiritually minded persons of all races, colors, and creeds were demonstrating a degree of stability, happiness and usefulness, which we should have sought ourselves. Q5.Did you use to (or still do) amuse yourself with cynically dissecting spiritual beliefs and organized religion? Q6. Read and re-read the last paragraph on page 49 and meditate on your gut reaction. [Where are you when you sit and read a paragraph like this? Are you ‘Yeah, you know I really ought to look into that’ or are you ‘Gimme a break. I want to throw up?’ Stephanie wants us to see how we feel]. [Did you look at a certain minister and he was involved with a scandal so you threw away organized religion because of human frailties. Or perhaps you went to a house of worship and they were unfriendly and so you gave it wholesale condemnation?] We talked of intolerance, while we were intolerant ourselves. Q7.What are you when it comes to things spiritual and things religious? Are you intolerant because you are looking at human defects or are you able to be kind and open-minded? Write this and put somewhere prominent: We missed the reality and the beauty of the forest because were diverted by the ugliness of some of its trees. We talk of intolerance while we were intolerant ourselves. Q8. Do you have that intolerance e.g. too many active in this AA meeting? Are you going to your 12-step meetings to grab for yourself? [It’s a self-caring and self-nurturing programme. When people say this is a selfish programme have not yet had a spiritual awakening]. We are going to be finding people who need our help, not criticizing them or boycotting meetings because people have not got what you want]. Q9. What is your experience strength and hope with yourself? What is your intolerance or maybe you are tolerant? We never gave the spiritual side of life a fair hearing. Q10. Did you give the spiritual side of life a fair hearing? Do you understand in your deepest recesses that recovery from all addiction is spiritual? God is everything or God is nothing. Have you reached that point yet? P. 50 line 13: Experience has taught us that these are matters about which, for our purpose, we need not be worried. Above ‘our’ write ‘12-step purpose’.
