The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Page xxvi ‘We believe, and so suggested a few years ago, that the action of alcohol on these chronic alcoholics is a manifestation of an allergy, that the phenomenon of craving is limited to this class and never occurs in the average temperate drinker. These allergic types can never safely use alcohol in any form at all; and once having formed the habit and found they cannot break it, once having lost their self-confidence their reliance upon things human, their problems pile up on them and become astonishingly difficult to solve. Frothy emotional appeal seldom suffices. The message which can interest and hold these alcoholic people must have depth and weight.’ soul work Write down: Chronic alcoholic equals real alcoholic Underline: they can never use alcohol in any form at all Beside: ‘average temperate drinker’ write: Moderate /Problem drinker Under ‘habit’ write ‘addiction’. Under ‘shallow’ write ‘frothy.’ Write down: You cannot stay away from the first bite/drink on your own. You have got to bring in God. Look up: allergy, manifestation, craving, temperate, frothy, suffices. Q1. Who is the doctor in The Doctor’s Opinion? What hospital did he work out of and who was he working with? Q2. What have we learned from the doctor thus far? Q3. Describe how being a chronic alcoholic/sex addict/food addict has played out as a double-edged sword in your life. Q4. Write your definitions of both moderate and problem alcoholic/food addicts. Give examples of how these two types look in person. Q5. If you are a chronic addict you will react differently from a problem and a moderate. Have you seen it and do you tend to compare yourself? Q6. Does knowing the difference in your step one fellowship between the moderate, problem and the chronic bring a much better understanding of your struggle as a chronic? Or does it give you more of an understanding of a sponsee who is a chronic when you are not? Q7 What does it mean to rely on things human when it concerns your addiction? And how did it work for you? Q8 Written in the workshop: Do you believe that God is more powerful than the craving in that nanosecond before you pick up and that nanosecond after you pick up? We have been told in a lot of our fellowships once you pick up you are a dead duck. That is not true. I was able to abort a binge. That was night of my the white light experience. God is more powerful than the disease.
