Chapter 4. We Agnostics. P. 44 from start of third paragraph: ‘But it isn’t so difficult…’ until end of first paragraph on page 45: ‘Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.’ Q1. Why do you think people who have 5, 15, 20 years of sobriety in their step one fellowship go back out? Write down: We have to give up our right to self-pity, getting even. Some of us tried to avoid living on a spiritual basis. Q2a. Write out an example of the last time you failed to live in a spiritual basis. 2b. What does it look like for you to live on a spiritual basis? At first some of us tried to avoid the issue, hoping against hope we ere not true alcoholics. Q3. If you are not a true alcoholic, do you need to live on a spiritual basis? Q4. Write on Stephanie’s definition of agnostic: is we know about God but instead of using God, we use man-made activities. Find out if you are an agonistic. Write down: If I am an atheist or an agonistic all I have to do is be willing to be willing to trust and rely on a higher power. But after a while we had to face the fact that we must find a spiritual basis of life – or else. Q5. What does this mean? Underline this sentence and circle the word ‘must’. If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago. But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we tried. We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically comforted in fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn’t there. Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly. Q6. Write on the above paragraph
