Donations to support the website: Stephanie Whiting P O Box 531 North Pembroke MA 02358 Soul work Big Book page 63:3 ‘We found it very desirable to take this spiritual step with an understanding person, such as our wife, best friend or spiritual adviser. But it is better to meet God alone than with one who might misunderstand. The wording was, of course, quite optional so long as we expressed the idea, voicing it without reservation. This was only a beginning, though if honestly and humbly made, an effect, sometimes a very great one, was felt at once.’ Q1. Write down the following: 1) Stephanie is not my Higher Power! 2) I do not have to do anything that Stephanie says or suggests. 3) Look up the word suggestion so you really know what she is doing: she is only suggesting. 4) Know that Stephanie wants you to really own your Big Book and recovery. Q2. Draw the spiritual triangle again with God/Higher Power at the top and on the left-hand bottom corner put your name and on the right-hand corner write your sponsor, step one fellowship, big book group, study buddy and program friends. Make sure you draw arrows pointing from both bottom corners up to God/Higher Power. Q3. Are you willing to walk this journey with God on top, with your intellect over those feelings of fear, doubt, insecurity and any other negative feelings? [It is so much easier to be told what to do rather than thinking for ourselves. When, for example, our step one fellowship tells us what to do, know they really have not studied the Big Book]. Q4. Questions to your sponsor. Next week is talk-to-your-sponsor Thursday. Stephanie will be available to answer questions or hear comments until 10am EST. If you want to you can also e-mail a question to her: [email protected] and she will bring it to the group (or text or phone her: 617 774 7016). Q5. Fellowship*. Bottom of page 63 is telling us something very very important. ‘We found it very desirable to take this spiritual step with an understanding person’. You need an understanding person. Get a buddy, get a group. If you don’t have a buddy or a group member list e-mail [email protected] explaining you need a buddy and to be put onto the group list. * Call one another other, share honestly. Become intimate and really learn to trust each other. Q6. What does ‘without reservation’ mean to you? Stephanie says: “I wanted you to take the 3rd step without reservation. I don’t think any human being can be 100 percent about anything, but we can be willing to be willing to be without reservation – that is good enough. I did not command you be willing to be willing. I did demand you not take step three if you could not say it honestly without reservation. Why? I cared enough for you to not take the commitment if you in your heart of hearts you were only doing it for the group or for me. Just as you say: God help me to be sober today, you can also say: God help me to be willing to be willing. It is only a beginning. It is a lifetime of work and thoroughness. I work on my own recovery and relationship with my higher power and I do the service of giving it away. The work is awesome, I love it. And the service gives a joy I have never known in any other arena. It is the greatest work I do. And being with all of you, suiting up and showing up when I am asked. Please don’t stop asking me to show up for you. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I mean that. I cannot wait for next week to be with you until 10am – I love that. So don’t think you are bothering me, I love it.” …though if honestly and humbly made an effect, sometimes a very great one, was felt at once. Q7. What do you want? Write from your heart. Q8. Trust and Rely meeting on Friday at 12 noon Stephanie: I really encourage you to come to the Trust & Rely meeting and if you cannot come live go to the recording and do what we are doing live – learn to write from your Higher Power and God. That is the way we get well. We get honest with ourselves. We see who we are. We are really very beautiful people, but we won’t even appreciate ourselves if we don’t get to know ourselves. The Trust & Rely meeting is really where this is all leading to. It is everything I got out of doing the Big Book process. I read something then I ask my Higher Power: “What do you want me to know about this? Then I write. It is not even me writing. It is my Higher Power writing through me. I then meditate and get even more. Meditating gives God more of a vehicle to talk to me and guide me. This is the whole purpose of doing the Big Book process: to really let your Higher Power guide your every step.

Donations to support the website: Stephanie Whiting P O Box 531 North Pembroke MA 02358 Big Book from top of page 63 – end of paragraph 2: “When we sincerely took such a position….” through Step Three prayer plus last sentence: “God, I offer myself to Thee- to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy power, Thy Love, and Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always!” We thought well before taking this step making sure we were ready; that we could at last abandon ourselves utterly to Him.” _____________________________________________________________________ Soul work Before doing any step work writing say the 3rd step prayer. It is the most of powerful prayers to overcome selfishness and self-centredness. Look up: abandon, utterly. Q1. Write down ‘Expect a miracle’. What does that mean to you? – not what you want but look and see what the miracles have been. 1(b) ….”all sorts of remarkable things (followed).” What’s been the remarkable things? (You need to be able to see with new eyes the remarkable things that God puts into your life.) Q2. Write out the 3rd Step Prayer on 3 x 5 inch cards. Stephanie suggests placing them: where we do our Quiet Time, on the fridge, in our car and always carry one with us. Q3. To abandon yourself utterly to your Higher Power you have got to know who your Higher Power is. This means spending time with God in Quiet Time. Instead of asking to know what God wants you to know about yourself instead inquire: “What do You want me to know about You?” Q4.a) Each day read different spiritual books such as AA Daily Reflections, OA 24-hour book, a religious book, Al-Anon daily readings, etc. Anything that tells you specifically what your Higher Power is all about and gives you insight. b) Then write on what you have read in a Dear God letter. Afterwards sit quietly for a minimum of five minutes (10 is better) and reflect on what you read and wrote asking your Higher Power to give you a word or a phrase to help you to get to know your Higher Power. Whenever your mind wanders pray: “God help me to know about You.” Q5. Memorize the 3rd Step Prayer and this week write on each word – rather than each sentence. Q6. Call people who will encourage you to live God’s will not your will; to be the best you can for your Higher Power and to relieve you of the bondage of self. 8/14/2014 0 Comments Recording For August 14, 2014week 137) 14 August 2014 12 Step Study Big Book All Addictions workshop
Big Book 1st paragraph on page 63. ‘When we sincerely took such a position, all sorts of remarkable things followed. We had a new Employer. Being all powerful, He provided what we needed, if we kept close to Him and performed His work well. Established on such a footing we became less and less interested in ourselves our little plans and designs. More and more we became interested in seeing what we could contribute to life. As we felt new power flow in, as we enjoyed peace of mind as we discovered we could face life successfully, as we became conscious of His presence, we began to lose our fear of today, tomorrow or the hereafter. We were reborn.’ Donations to support the website: Stephanie Whiting, P O Box 531 North Pembroke MA 02358 Any questions or comments on the workshop contact: [email protected] Tel: 617 774 7916. Soul work Look up: established Q1. Read and re-read pages 59, 60, 61, 62, 63. What do they mean to you? Read them to your group. Ask if you can share at a meeting in your step one fellowship and take out your Big Book and end at the 3rd step prayer. [Help people to understand. There are famous people committing suicide. And for every famous one there are five in local groups who are also killing themselves. This is a serious mental illness and the answer is in the Big book. These five pages are not the whole answer but they sum it up pretty well – especially a, b, and c.] Q2. Write HOW: Honesty Open-mindedness Willingness. HOW brings recovery and it works. Write on HOW. Q3. Write on the title of this chapter: How it Works. God is everything or God is nothing. When we sincerely took such a position, all sorts of remarkable things followed. Q4a) Are you doing your Quiet Time? b) Are you showing up for your buddy? c) Are you doing your soul work? d) Are you supporting the buddy groups? e) Are you supporting the workshop for the greater good or just taking for yourself? We had a new Employer. Being all powerful, He provided what we needed, if we kept close to Him and performed His work well. (Note that it says ‘needed’ not ‘wanted’). Q5. Write down your needs. Whenever there is the word ‘if’ in the Big Book, it is a directive, followed by a promise. If we kept close to our God (directive No. 1). Q6. How are you doing with your Quiet Time. How can it be improved? Perform God’s work well (directive no. 2) is what I2-step recovery is all about. Q7a). What does it mean in your life to perform God’s work well? b) Do you know what you are supposed to be doing? Write it down. Make an action Plan. Q8. Are you doing a nightly review? [You may say ‘I am not on that step yet’. However need to do Steps 10 11 12 every day of your life because you are in recovery]. Established on such a footing we became less and less interested in ourselves our little plans and designs (directive no. 3). Q9a) What is your action plan? b) Are you becoming interested in seeing what you can contribute to life? Give five examples of how you have contributed to life this year, week or today. 7th step prayer My Creator I am now willing for you to have all of me, good and bad. I now pray that you remove from me every single defect of character that stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength and I got out from here to do your bidding. Q10. Start memorizing this prayer. [It is the second half of the 3rd step prayer. They are really one prayer. The 3rd step prayer in the Big Book does not have an ‘Amen’ as still so much work to do in steps 4, 5 & 6]. 8/7/2014 0 Comments Recording For August 7, 2014BB Soulwork Homework August 7, 2014
