It was only by repeated humiliations that we were forced to learn something about humility. It was only at the end of a long road, marked by successive defeats and humiliations, and the final crushing of our self-sufficiency, that we began to feel humility as something more than a condition of grovelling despair. Every newcomer in Alcoholics Anonymous is told, and soon realises for himself, that his humble admission of powerlessness over alcohol is his first step toward liberation from its paralysing grip.’ Q1 Go over that paragraph, personalise and own it for your own story. Q2. Where are you on self-reliance and if you make a mistake, how are you handling it? Are you humiliating yourself, lying to cover up your mistakes? Are you out there saying: Yes I made a mistake. Are you in denial, pointing fingers at other people: They made me do it because of xyz. [It is good to put the finger on the pulse of self-reliance. Self-reliance is defiance – all about me]. Q3. First paragraph page 73 underline and circle: ‘To get completely away from our aversion to the idea of being humble, to gain a vision of humility as the avenue to true freedom of the human spirit, to be willing to work for humility as something to be desired for itself, takes most of us a long, long time.’ Q4. What does humility mean to you? Wealth? Power? A perfect size 4, perfect hair, perfect relationship, that friend? Where are you when you think about humility? [We either come with humility or one day we will end up in grovelling despair. You can take your pick!)

Are you a good influence to people? Are you living that so you are a good role model for others? Is the true purpose of your life to be honest, tolerant, truly loving of everyone especially God, as your daily basis for living? Do you think that this is what your purpose should be? This lack of anchorage to any permanent values, this blindness to the true purpose of our lives produced another bad result. Q2. Write about your history of blindness. When did it start? When did you come out of blindness? What do you think you are still blind about? [This is what step seven is all about. When we are in the food, alcohol, it is so hard to see anything of reality. They are chemicals and they change your body chemistry]. ‘Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.’ Q3. On the workshop website find the Second Step proposition which goes perfectly with this step. Where is the insanity in your life? Why are you afraid of turning this over to God? [Wherever you are insane right now you know you haven’t turned it over to God. A fear question in there. It is always control. I want to control a situation. The thing is: insanity cannot be controlled. It is like a train without a locomotive going 100 mph down the track]. Q4. Where is the negativity in your life or a person you are blinded about? b) Have you given them over to God? [And you may give them over and take them back.] Q5. Make your own Just For Today card. ‘Just for today I will…’ ‘As long as we placed self-reliance first, a genuine reliance onGod was out of the question. That basic ingredient of all humility, the desire to seek and do God’s will was missing’. Q6. Write on this, really dissect it. Ask yourself: Am I placing self-reliance first? Is a genuine reliance upon God what I really want? How am I doing with that? Do I believe that humility is the basic ingredient? Do I want to do God’s will? [Be honest. Remember honesty and tolerance of others means also loving yourself where you are at. If you read Step 7 lying to yourself about where you are in your life what good does it do? Are you going to get well if you are in denial and lying about yourself? Be stark raving honest. Then tell somebody. Get honest with your sponsor, buddy, somebody.. Get it up and out. Steps 6 and 7 are all about really looking at yourself in the mirror]. 2/11/2016 0 Comments Recording For February 11, 2016week 115) 11 February 2016 12 Step Study All Addictions Workshop
12 x 12 Step 7: ‘Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.’ Last line of page 71: ‘True, most of us thought good character was desirable…’ until end of the paragraph on page 72 ’…We never thought of making honesty tolerance and true love of man and God the daily basis of living.’ If you wish to donate towards the upkeep of the website send this to: Stephanie Whiting PO Box 531 North Pembroke MA 02358 NOTE: Sue is compiling a brand new members’ list so if you would like to be included whether you are an existing or new member please send your name, phone number, time zone and if you wish, times to call, along with your email to: [email protected] If you do not have email, telephone her on: 434 987 4349 Soul work look up: moral Seldom did we look at character-building as something desirable in itself, something we would like to strive for whether our instinctual needs were met or not. Q1a). Write about being self-satisfied in a positive way. Q1b) How can I come out of this situation with character-building, feeling grateful? [This means going against our selfishness. We need to stop and ask ourselves: what character-building action do I need right now? Do I need to be honest with others, myself, live one of my morals? Doing the next right action that you can take to Quiet Time and feel good about. .] Q2 a) Write about a situation when you chose character-building over the alternative. b) Write on a situation where you failed to choose character-building. ‘We never thought of making honesty, tolerance and true love of man and God the daily basis of living.’ Q3. What does 100% honesty and tolerance look to you? Write about what it looks like when you think of making 100% honesty, 100% tolerance of others (live and let live) and true love of others a way of life. Brotherly love, really caring for the guy on the street or the cashier behind the counter and having a good attitude about the world. [Own your own morality and honesty. Learn what your morals and values are. You have your sex ideal but it is only one ideal. You need an ideal in your job, as a child of your parents, being a member of a community, a congregation, etc. You need all your ideals and to put them together to create character building. When you live up to those ideals you are building a character . How can you do that without an ideal?] 2/4/2016 0 Comments Recording For February 4, 2016(week 114) 4 February 2016 12 Step Study All Addictions Workshop

What is God saying to you? Where do you think your path is? In all humility accepting where you are today, moving towards what God wants you to be, where do you think God is is leading you? [Maybe one of you is saying: I have always wanted to learn to ski and been afraid. Or: I really want to take a trip to Switzerland, but always put it off. This is a lack of humility and is not accepting who you are today and being willing to walk where God wants you to walk. And it is Quiet Time and Action Plan. Quiet Time and Action.] ‘In all these strivings, so many of them well-intentioned, our crippling handicap had been our lack of humility. We had lacked perspective to see that character-building and spiritual values had to come first, and that material satisfactions were not the purpose of living. Quite characteristically, we had gone all out in confusing the ends with the means. Instead of regarding the satisfaction of our material desires as the means by which we could live and function as human beings, we had taken these satisfactions to be the final end and aim of life.’ Q2. Write on these four sentences. What is your perspective? Are you lacking humility because you don’t think you are paid enough? Or you are dissatisfied with the job and are only staying for the money? What do you think about character building? Is it important to you? Are spiritual values important to you and why? Do they come because you are afraid or because they are in your heart? Q3. New slogan: Bless them and change me. Write on this. What does it mean in relation to humility and the perspective of you doing character building and caring about spiritual values? ‘We never thought of making honesty, tolerance, and true love of man and God the daily basis of living.’ Q4 What is your aim in life? ‘True, most of us thought good character was desirable, but obviously good character was something one needed to get on with the business of being self-satisfied.’ Q5. What happens when addicts, we ourselves, live for being self-satisfied? Q6 If we used a proper display of (100%) honesty and morality (values) we’d stand a better chance of getting what we really want. Where are you on the spectrum? Q7.
