Look up: extricate
‘Since defective relations with other human beings has nearly always been the immediate cause of our woes, including our alcoholism, no field of investigation could yield more satisfying and valuable rewards than this one.’

Q1. Can you think of how this applies to you?
[All of our problems always boil down to how we were relating to others]

Q2. Go back to penultimate paragraph page 79 and write on the following:
a) ’This attitude, (that we never harmed anyone when drinking) is the end result of purposeful forgetting. It is an attitude which can only be changed by a deep and honest search of our motives and actions.’
b) Do we have the willingness to extricate from this search the amends we need to make?
c) Is it the case that these unresolved issues ‘…have actually given our emotions violent twists which have since discolored our personalities and altered our lives for the worse.’

> Now, include how your unforgiveness affects your pocketbook, self esteem, pride, sex, etc.
>
> 2) Write out the following sentence: “If we are now about to ask forgiveness for ourselves, why shouldn’t we start out by forgiving them, one and all?” Rewrite this 3 different times during the week, and see how it changes as you bring it to God each time.
>
> 3) How do we feel about this sentence: “Why, we cried, shouldn’t bygones be bygones?” Write on it.
>
> 4) What constitutes sober behavior for me today?

Big Book Into Action. The Promises Pages 83:4 and 84:1
‘If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are halfway through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us – sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

Starting 83:3 as said last week this gives you very clear cut directions.’

look up these words:
painstaking
serenity
extravagant
materialize

Q1. What did you learn today about the Promises?

Q2. Where are the Promises coming through in your life?

Q3. And where is God showing you that you need to bring certain areas to Him?

(Week 203) September 1, 2016 – Thursday Big Book Step Study

Group membership
There are no requirements for membership of this group. You may not be on amends (where we are) you may be dealing with step one. That is fine. All of these steps support one another so if you are still on step 4 you can be listening to step 9 and it doesn’t matter. It is like step 9 supports step 4 or step 1. Or you may be all done with steps 8 and 9 and you can still come, because step 9 supports living in steps 10, 11 and 12. I know I will never lose my need of doing steps 1-12. So you can be guaranteed that I am going to be taking you through the steps for the rest of my life. And you can choose to come or not to come. It is up to you.

Freedom from obsession comes at a price and the price: constant vigilance.
We cannot rest on our laurels.
Today’s reading: BB (4th ed.) P. 83 beginning para 3 – p.84 end of full para 1 “They will always materialize if we work for them.”
We’re currently in Steps 8 and 9; they are hard to separate. Step 8 is the approach position to making amends, to people we have hurt or harmed, the ‘GETTING READY’ stage. Step 9 is the actual ACTION of making amends.
P.83 para 3 is FULL of direction on how to approach doing amends. Remember: BE HUMBLE! But, ‘As G-d’s people we STAND ON OUR FEET; we don’t crawl before anyone.’
P. 83 para 4 is chock full of the Eighth Step promises with each new sentence.
Steps 1-8 get us ready to be at Step 9.

SOUL WORK:
Look up: (p.83) postpone/ delay/ sensible/ tactful/ considerate/ humble/ servile/ scraping
(p.84) extravagant/ materialize
What is the “work” we must do for the Step 8 promises to materialize? Getting past our strong feelings of ‘why should I make amends to them? Look how they hurt me!’ – by naming and claiming what is ours to claim ( i.e. negative actions, character defects) and putting the intellect over the emotions. Doing so will also help us to not pick up another, different addiction in an effort to fill our ‘God hole’.

Rather, we must do the work in our Quiet Time, of going to God and asking, in our dis-ease, “what do I have to do to make things right?” This IS hard work; working through our character defects, bringing them to God in QT and praying on them for God to show us, clearly, what we must know and do to correct our part. We live IN COMMUNITY and we look for esteem. So to see our part and not wait for the other party to apologize IS the ‘hard work’.
