Soulwork The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Page xxvi ‘If any feel that as psychiatrists directing a hospital for alcoholics we appear somewhat sentimental, let them stand with us a while on the firing line, see the tragedies, the despairing wives, the little children; let the solving of these problems become a part of their daily work, and even of their sleeping moments, and the most cynical will not wonder that we have accepted and encouraged this movement. We feel, after many years of experience, that we have found nothing which has contributed more to the rehabilitation of these men than the altruistic movement now growing up among them. Men and woman drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol. The sensation is so elusive that while they admit it is injurious, they cannot after a time differentiate the true from the false. To them, their alcoholic life seems the only normal one. They are restless irritable and discontented, unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks - drinks which they see others taking with impunity…’ Look up: altruistic, elusive. injurious In the workshop and as the first topic of soul work, describe in your own words your experience of the second paragraph above. Q1. Go back and write about your own tragedy. Do a mini drunkalogue. And then say: I came into recovery and I put that book on the shelf and started a new story. Q2. Write about the new story. Q3. Who encouraged you to go to AA (or your step one fellowship) ? We feel, after many years of experience, that we have found nothing which has contributed more to the rehabilitation of these men than the altruistic movement now growing up among them. Q4. Do you agree with this? How has it shown itself to be true in your life? Q5. How are you contributing to the rehabilitation (recovery) of others by giving it away, helping others. What are you actually doing? Q6. When you used drugs, alcohol, food, trying to control others, etc, what was the particular effect you got from this? Q7. How do you counteract the desire for that effect? Q8. How can you put God into the situation - making a God sandwich? Give an example of the last time you used the God sandwich on something. Ends

Soulwork The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Page xxvi ‘Frothy emotional appeal seldom suffices. The message which can interest and hold these alcoholic people must have depth and weight. In nearly all cases, their ideals must be grounded in a power greater than themselves, if they are to re-create their lives. If any feel that as psychiatrists directing a hospital for alcoholics we appear somewhat sentimental, let them stand with us a while on the firing line, see the tragedies, the despairing wives, the little children; let the solving of these problems become a part of their daily work, and even of their sleeping moments, and the most cynical will not wonder that we have accepted and encouraged this movement...' Look up: ideals, grounded, sentimental Q1. Where is God in your continuum?. Is God the most important thing in your life? Q2. Is your way of life well-balanced and sensible in all areas? Is your sobriety integrated into a sensible way of life or are you over the top with your recovery? [If you are new, your well-balanced life is different from those with over 90 days.] Q3. Are you well-balanced in your family life or are you co-dependent in your work and in other areas of your life? Q4. Meditate, pray and then write on this prayer: God/Higher Power I have not arrived and I thank you God for giving me the grace of my sobriety. And God bring me to where you need me to be so I can be helpful to others. Amen. Q5. Do we recreate our lives so that we look good and people pat us on the back? Or recreate our life out of thanksgiving to God for bringing us out of the dung heap of addiction and recreate us so that we can be helpful to others? Q6. How do you want to be recreated? Q7. Write on the slogan: Stop Drop and Ask God for help. Writing in the workshop Q8. Is your recovery contributing to making your whole life well-balanced and sensible? 11/13/2018 0 Comments Recording for November 13, 2018(Week 10) 13

The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Page xxvi ‘We believe, and so suggested a few years ago, that the action of alcohol on these chronic alcoholics is a manifestation of an allergy, that the phenomenon of craving is limited to this class and never occurs in the average temperate drinker. These allergic types can never safely use alcohol in any form at all; and once having formed the habit and found they cannot break it, once having lost their self-confidence their reliance upon things human, their problems pile up on them and become astonishingly difficult to solve. Frothy emotional appeal seldom suffices. The message which can interest and hold these alcoholic people must have depth and weight.’ soul work Write down: Chronic alcoholic equals real alcoholic Underline: they can never use alcohol in any form at all Beside: ‘average temperate drinker’ write: Moderate /Problem drinker Under ‘habit’ write ‘addiction’. Under ‘shallow’ write ‘frothy.’ Write down: You cannot stay away from the first bite/drink on your own. You have got to bring in God. Look up: allergy, manifestation, craving, temperate, frothy, suffices. Q1. Who is the doctor in The Doctor’s Opinion? What hospital did he work out of and who was he working with? Q2. What have we learned from the doctor thus far? Q3. Describe how being a chronic alcoholic/sex addict/food addict has played out as a double-edged sword in your life. Q4. Write your definitions of both moderate and problem alcoholic/food addicts. Give examples of how these two types look in person. Q5. If you are a chronic addict you will react differently from a problem and a moderate. Have you seen it and do you tend to compare yourself? Q6. Does knowing the difference in your step one fellowship between the moderate, problem and the chronic bring a much better understanding of your struggle as a chronic? Or does it give you more of an understanding of a sponsee who is a chronic when you are not? Q7 What does it mean to rely on things human when it concerns your addiction? And how did it work for you? Q8 Written in the workshop: Do you believe that God is more powerful than the craving in that nanosecond before you pick up and that nanosecond after you pick up? We have been told in a lot of our fellowships once you pick up you are a dead duck. That is not true. I was able to abort a binge. That was night of my the white light experience. God is more powerful than the disease. 11/6/2018 0 Comments Recording For November 6, 2018(Week 9) 6 November 2018

The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Page xxv ‘Later he requested the privilege of being allowed to tell his story to other patients here and with some misgiving, we consented. The cases we have followed through have been most interesting; in fact, many of them are amazing. The unselfishness of these men as we have come to know them, the entire absence of profit motive, and their community spirit, is indeed inspiring to one who has labored long and hard in this alcoholic field. They believe in themselves, and still more in the Power which pulls chronic alcoholics back from the gates of death.’ Soulwork Look up unselfishness Q1. How are you doing with your Quiet Time? Is it as much a priority as sobriety? Q2. Are you a real alcoholic in your step one fellowship or are you a moderate or problem drinker/clutterer/overeater? Q3.
