We need a few people willing to take down the questions for the soul work in case Angela is away (or as sometimes happens cannot get through on the international phone line). Please email: [email protected] Thank you! Soul work The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Doctor’s Opinion Q1. The WE is about fellowship and transparency with God at the top of the triangle. Do I have accountability? Is God in charge of my recovery, my relationships with my sponsors, accountability group? Do I have transparency? Do I put God in the middle of all this? Q2. In the time since writing about your plan for recovery have you done any tweaking of it? Have you tightened it up a little? ‘To Whom It May Concern.’ Next to this write your name. Next to ‘I’ write: Dr Silkworth ‘In the course of his (write Bill W) third treatment he acquired certain ideas concerning a possible means of recovery. Q3. Have you acquired certain ideas: that you are physically addicted to alcohol? (or whatever you are addicted to), that no power on earth, no program, no food plan, no sponsor, can bring you recovery? And that God could and would relieve the physical, emotional and spiritual addiction if you were willing to let God be in charge of your recovery? Q4. In your step one meetings are you sharing your experience strength and hope? How you work the steps, the strength you found in working a physical emotional and spiritual programme? Are you sharing the miracle of recovery? Or do you dump your garbage and it is always about your problems? Write this down: Recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of body and mind. Q5. When was the last time you thought about drinking/eating foods that you know will kill you? Q6. Do you work your program so that to pray, plan, prepare protect is part of your normal every day. Or is it drudgery? Write down: Recovered is not cured. Question to write on in the workshop: Have you ever felt hopeless in your recovery journey? ends

Call back number: 641 715 3900 pin no. 95666# (available for a week) Important announcement Beginning Tuesday 16th October 2018 the Big Book meeting will be held on Tuesdays and the Tuesday meeting will be held on Thursdays. Both meetings continue to start at 8am. The other difference is that starting today the Big Book meeting will change its format and run for 90 minutes rather than the previous 60 minutes. There will be 45 minutes of Stephanie talking followed by the group writing for ten minutes on a question she will pose. There will then be 35 minutes of members sharing their written answers. The workshop will finish at 9.30am EST. Tuesdays 8-9am EST Reading AA literature at present: Living Sober & As Bill Sees It. Everyone is encouraged to come to this awesome group. To listen to the recording: 641 715 3900 pin no. 298913# Big Book The Anonymous Press (800) 800 4398 anonpress.org Publish a Big Book study version with a blank sheet opposite each page of text. The list from the previous workshop has been deleted. Soul work The Doctor’s Opinion We of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the reader will be interested in the medical estimate of the plan of recovery described in this book. Convincing testimony must surely come from medical men who have had experience with the sufferings of our members and have witnessed our return to health. A well-known doctor, chief physician at a nationally prominent hospital specializing in alcoholic and drug addictions, gave Alcoholics Anonymous this letter: 1. Ensure you are on the Members’ list (see above) as it will shortly be compiled and sent out. 2. Go to 12stepstudyworkshop.weebly.com Click on ‘handouts’ and find the Third Step Prayer and the Set Aside Prayer. What do they mean to you? 3.Are you interested: ’… in the medical estimate of the plan of recovery described in this book?’ 4. Write this down: Recovery is a "We" program. The symbol of AA is a triangle. Draw a triangle around ‘We’ in your big book. Who constitutes the We? Write God at the top. On the right-hand corner write your name. On the left-hand corner write your step one fellowship(s). Then add sponsor, accountability, friends. Draw two-way arrows linking all three corners. 5. We know in AA that nothing happens in God’s world by mistake. Do you believe that? 6. What is your estimate that every institution is basically run by the WE philosophy? The Group: wrote for ten minutes then shared for 35 minutes Look up: self-sufficiency. Write on that word. How does self-sufficiency block me from living the ‘WE’ philosophy of AA? 7. Write down: PRAY, PLAN OF RECOVERY, PREPARE, PROTECT Write on three specific times this week when you Prayed, Planned, Prepared and Protected your recovery. 8. Beside: ‘…a well known doctor’ write: Dr Silkworth. Google him. Ends (week 1) 13 September 2018 12 Step Study Big Book All Addictions Workshop

Expenses You are responsible for the expenses of the workshop. My husband and I have paid 90% of the workshop costs. Put your money where your heart lies. I want to pay Debbie a good amount for what she does. She has redone the whole of the website so we are no longer paying thousands of dollars in storage. She is a professional. She does everything pro bono. So I give her everything I can. I want to thank the people who continuously supported the website for over six years. Thank you God my husband and I are in a position whereby if we do not have enough donations my husband has been very very generous. But it is your website. I am robbing you of the gift of the Seventh Tradition: to be fully self-supporting through our own contributions. You can donate by Pay Pal via the website or send a check to our Post office box address: Stephanie Whiting PO Box 531 North Pembroke MA 02358 Buddies Get a temporary buddy to share your soulwork with. Do you want a buddy or two or a group? You can do as much or as little accountability as you like. Set Aside Prayer There is a handout on the website on the Set Aside Prayer and where it originates. Third Step Prayer You might like to start to memorise this. God, I offer myself to Thee – to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life. May I do Thy will always! Soulwork: Q1. Write down: I am here at the Big Book step study workshop because I have thought that something that hurts me will help me. That is distorted thinking. Q2. Stephanie suggests getting a three ring notebook and paper. ‘There are at least 100 handouts on the website that will help you with the big book. I hope you take copious notes and you really dig deep. I know I am going to.’ Q3. Read the Foreword. If you have the Anonymous Press edition you only have one Foreword. If you have the fourth edition you have four editions. Read the first Foreword. Q4. Take the first word of the Doctor’s Opinion and draw a triangle around it. We of alcoholics anonymous. The ‘We’ is one of the most important concepts of recovery. Q5. Go to the website choose a handout and write on it. Q6. Quiet Time: 15-20 minutes daily. a) Read something from the Big Book, As Bill Sees It, or from your religious community, or Al-Anon One Day At A Time, etc. Unless you have a problem and you are bringing God something that is right in your face, like you ate last night or your boss is being mean. Quiet Time is where the mirror of your soul is exposed. You don’t have to be afraid. If you are afraid tell God: I am afraid of letting you know me, let alone love me. b) Write a Dear God letter. Dear God, Thank you. These are my gratitudes. c) Then make an Action Plan. e.g. I will call and make an appointment with the doctor about a mole I found…. that is my action plan for today. Something that has come up in your Quiet Time that you know or something intuitively you know you need to do. That will unblock the control that you have lived with all your life in blocking out God. Once you have stopped blocking God you are emotionally much more stable and no longer need to escape into whatever your addiction tells you will make you feel safe. You will not have a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps if every day you do not go to God. He will just be a stranger as He may be today. And your emotions and your sense: I have got to control everything; I have got to be a lone wolf; I cannot trust anybody: at the end of the 12 steps will still be there. Only God can give you that trust. I am OK in the world. I do not need food, to boss people around. Those are the things that you have made as little idols, as god in your life. God is saying: I want to heal you. I want you to see that this dis-ease is unnecessary. Ends (Wk 347) 06 Sep 2018 12Step Study BB All Addictions Workshop

If someone is no longer on the meeting it is an opportunity to ask if they would be interested in joining the next Big Book workshop which will starts September 13 2018 IMPORTANT: The next Big Book Study Group will start on Thursday 13 September 2018. Pass this message onto anyone you think may be interested in joining. SOUL WORK When you’re looking for self importance, TURN TO G-D. “...in God’s sight all human beings are important...”(AA 12&12 p.124 para 2 sent. 3) We’re really only important to G-d. We can be replaced to our spouses, children, church groups, community groups, service groups, etc. For Stephanie, recovery today is knowing that it’s very nice to be wanted, but it’s only REALLY important to be successful in our being with G-d, in relating to G-d. (Helpful guided imagery here: Think about the anticipation you feel when waiting to meet a friend!) Now Bill W. takes into co-dependent Al-Anon Adult issues: Q1) Write on this: Do you really feel you’re so important to G-d? Q2) Is this true for you( AA 12&12 p. 124 para 1 sent. 3): “We no longer seek fame and honor in order to be praised.” Q3)(a)When you do get notoriety(AA 12&12 p.124 para 1 sent. 4), can you stay humble? (b)And, are you giving that service in the spirit of love and service and doing that service in humility- or is your ego filling the Hall? (c) Are you able to stay right-sized? Q4a)And when you go beyond for friends and family - can you really give without strings, without expecting anything in return? Q5)And how would you handle it if you were chosen for World Service and no one in your Step One fellowship even cared? Can you go to your Step One fellowship and just be one-among-many and remember that you don't have to be something, that most importantly you are important to G-d? We need to partner first with G-d, then with the world. The mature AAer, one who has had a spiritual awakening, is one whose outsides are matched to his/her insides in ALL areas, when who we THINK we are actually matches our basic congruence. Q6)Are you (still) a lone wolf (after all the time spent in this workshop) or do you have community? ( ANY kind of group-e.g. card group, church group, service group...) We humans NEED people. We were meant to be in relationship. (“...self-constructed prisons”=s among other things: believing in being self-reliant. AA 12&12 p.124 para 2 sent. 3) Q7) Have you reached that point yet where G-d makes sure that you get back more than you’ve given- either in material or spiritual blessings? (AA 12&12 p.124 mid para 2: “...love freely given surely brings a full return...”) Q8) Bill W. ends the AA 12&12 WELL. Do you end well? Q9) Write about(AA 12&12 p.124 next to last sent.- p.125 end of top line): “True ambition is not what we thought it was. True ambition is the deep desire to live usefully and walk humbly under the grace of God.” And remember: You cannot get well without 100% honesty. So if you’re not 100% honest about 100% of your life, come out of the darkness and grab your INTEGRITY. P.S. In G-d’s World, we fit perfectly “no longer square pegs in round holes”. With THAT KNOWLEDGE, we can hold our heads High and DO ANYTHING! |
